Lucky for Life Rules in the USA
The lottery started in 2009, and its first name was Lucky-4-Life because of the rules that implied the choice of 4 numbers. The first draw took place in Connecticut, and later, other states began to join. Today, 23 states are participating in the lottery, and you can see the list of them below. The game matrix was changed several times, but now the system sets a double matrix of 5/48 plus 1/18. It has been used since January 2015.
That would be better for you to know these points:
- The minimum age set for the participants is 18 in most states. However, the participants must be 19 or older in Nebraska and over 21 years old in Iowa.
- There are two lifetime prizes.
- You may purchase the tickets at any retailer marked by the special lottery sign or on websites. Check our list of reputable lottery sites and find the best of them!
- The jackpot is always shared between all first-prize winners. No one can claim annuity payments if there are over 15 of them.
- The second prize will be shared as well, but this will happen even if there are more than 25 winners. Note that the cash option is only possible in this case.
Lucky for Life rules are very, very simple:
- Select 5 main numbers between 1 and 48.
- Choose a Lucky Ball number ranging from 1 to 18.
- Ask for the Quick Pick option for the random selection of numbers. The computer will do that for you.
Lucky for Life draws are held 7 days a week in the evening. You may follow the results online or see them on their own YouTube channel.

If you were lucky enough to win, you shouldn’t miss your chance to claim the prize. As a rule, there is a 180-day period, but in some states, it is extended up to 1 year for all the prizes except the jackpot, which should be claimed within 60 days after the draw was completed.
The rules for claiming lottery winnings are rather typical.
Prize | How to get your prize in cash |
---|---|
$1 – $599 | Visit the retailer where you’ve purchased your winning ticket to claim your prize. It is possible only in the metro area where you have played, as no other participating state will redeem your money. |
$600+ | There are local district lottery offices and claim centers at your disposal. Also, you can mail your winning tickets along with the filled-out claim form. |
Jackpot winners may receive their prize at their state lottery headquarters. There are two options available to them. Thus, they can get the whole amount as a lump sum in cash or choose the “Day for Life” or “Year for Life” option depending on the prize level. In the first case, they will be paid $1,000 per day, weekly, while in the second case, they will receive $25,000 once a year.
Some of the Lucky for Life winnings are subject to taxation. Don’t worry if you have won up to $600, as you don’t need to pay anything. As for other prizes, there is an approximate list of possible taxes for them:
- income state revenue depending on the metro area for the prizes up to $5,000
- 25% federal tax for prizes over $5,000
- 39,6% for the jackpot
Besides, you can always turn to the lottery tax calculator and count the total amount you will receive after taxes.
