The Michigan Lottery games start mostly around half past seven, so you can play and see the results for several of them at once. Still, the national lotteries take place late at night, and the number games have midday drawings, so we think it will be helpful for you to sort it all out.

Claim Lottery Winnings in Michigan

The claiming period for the lottery prizes in Michigan is 365 days. All the players find more than enough to get their money, so there are few unclaimed lottery winnings across the state. Read our in-depth claim guide and choose the most convenient way.

Claiming OptionHow to Collect a Prize
Claim in Person

Before claiming, estimate the amount you’ve hit, as the way you will collect your prize depends on it:

  1. The in-store prizes under $600 can be redeemed at any Michigan Lottery retailer.
  2. The prizes exceeding $600 and up to $99,999 can be claimed at the Michigan Lottery’s regional offices.
  3. The big wins must be collected at the Lottery Headquarters in Michigan only.

Please note that personal claims at the Regional Offices and the Headquarters are made by appointment only. Call 1-844-917-6325 to make it.

Claim by Mail

You can mail your documents to collect any prizes up to and including $99,999.99. Envelope your Ticket Receipt Form, make copies of both sides of your ticket (for your personal record, the original one must be sent), attach copies of your valid photo ID and your Social Security Card, and mail it all to:

Michigan Lottery

Attn: Claim Center

101 E. Hillsdale

P.O. Box 30023

Lansing, MI 48909

Claim by Drop Off

The Michigan Lottery Regional Offices have drop-off areas for the appropriate claims. If you prefer this option, just stop by a claim center and follow the signs and instructions there.

All the prizes collected by a drop-off are mailed to the winners in the form of a check.

Claim Lottery Winnings Online

All the prizes under $600 are deposited directly into the players’ accounts, so you can withdraw your money at any time.

If you were lucky enough to win more (up to $99,999.99), you must initiate the claim process right in your account and provide copies of all the documents above. If the claim is approved, you will receive your prize in your lottery account as well.

To get an amount of $100,000 and over, submit an online claim and visit the Michigan Lottery Headquarters in Lansing.

Michigan Lottery Claim Form

The winning claim form (or Ticket Receipt Form) of the Michigan Lottery must be attached to any claim of $600 or more. The order of completion is very distinct:

  1. Download the Michigan Lottery Ticket Receipt Form and print it.
  2. Read the instructions on the first page carefully.
  3. Fill out all the lines on the form in block letters.
  4. Check and sign the form.
  5. Mail it or bring it to the Lottery Regional Office for a personal or a drop-off claim.

Michigan Lottery Rules and Laws

The history of the Michigan Lottery began in 1972. Years have passed, the games have been introduced and eliminated, and the principles have changed, but the lottery fans have always been there. Today, the pools for the games in Michigan are subject to the following rules:

  • The minimum legal gambling age is 18, as usual.
  • For big jackpot games, the choice between the lump sum and the annuity installments is provided. Powerball, Mega Millions, Lotto 47, and Lucky for Life are on the list.
  • Almost all the draw games in Michigan can be played online.
  • You will have even more gaming opportunities if you have your own Michigan Lottery account.

Michigan Tax on Lottery Winnings

All the prizes starting at $600 are taxable in Michigan. There are some intricacies concerning taxation, so our tables below and the lottery payout calculator will help estimate everything.

Lottery Taxes on Michigan Winnings for U.S. Citizens and Residents

PrizeTax TypeTax Percentage
$600-$5,000These amounts must be reported to the IRS, and a W-2G will be handed to you for it.
$5,000 and overState tax4.25%
Federal tax24%
Total28.25%

The same taxes will be withheld if you are a non-Michigan resident. Please note that the outstanding debts will be withheld from any prizes of $1,000 and over.

Lottery Taxes on Michigan Winnings for Non-U.S. Citizens and Residents

PrizeTax TypeTax Percentage
$600 and moreState tax4.25%
Federal tax30%

Still, the more you win, the more you receive. If you hit a high amount, the taxes don’t matter much. Read the stories of the lottery winners who are still wealthy, and you’ll understand everything. Good luck!
