Keno Rules in France
Keno is a game provided by the Française des Jeux Group (FDJ), authorized by the government to act as the official gambling provider in France. Keno started in September 1993 as a Thursday lottery with midday draws, and later, some changes followed:
- 1995 – Tuesday plays are added to the Keno format.
- 1996 – Keno has been a daily lottery since then.
- 2013 – The name of the lottery is changed to Keno Gagnant à Vie.
- 2014 – Keno results are not aired on TV anymore.
- 2018-2020 – Some multipliers were removed, and only X2, X3, and X5 are left.
If you are a Keno beginner, then it is helpful to learn some key features of the game:
- In France, you are allowed to take part in the game only if you are at least 18 years old.
- The game is played according to classical Keno principles. To enter the draw, you pick from 2 to 10 numbers out of 70 balls. You can choose lottery numbers on your own or with Quick Pick. Within the play, 20 balls are drawn, and you must match certain numbers to win a prize.
- The Keno prize charts may seem a bit tricky, as the prizes are won only at a certain number of balls matched. You may need some time to figure it all out.
- The Keno jackpot is €200,000, and you can take it as a lump sum or get €10,000 every year for a lifetime.
- Thanks to the combination of bets and multipliers, the maximum you can win is €20,000,000. Still, we don’t know if anybody managed to take it.
- The French Keno is based on a weekly format.
- There are a few ways to place your lottery bet: over the counter, online, or in the mobile app.
Playing Keno is very simple here, so we are going to provide you with a short guide:
- Search for an FDJ-participating retailer nearby and give it a visit.
- Take a playslip and study it carefully.
- Select from 2 to 10 numbers between 1 and 70. If you don’t know what numbers to prefer, Quick Pick will come in handy.
- Choose your multiplier and put the appropriate mark in the corresponding field.
- Decide on your bet, as there are several options.
- Mark the time of your play, as there are two options on the Keno game slip.
- Exchange your gameslip for the paper ticket and store it in a safe place until the end of the draw.
- Bonne chance!
If you want to play the lottery online, the steps are the following:
- Create an account on the FDJ official site.
- Make the choices according to the scheme applied to the in-store game.
- Add playing favorites if you like.
- Pass over to the payment page by clicking the Play button, and you are in the game!
To see if you are a winner of several hundred thousand euros, use these options:
- the results of the draw are released on the official Keno result page;
- the FDJ iOS or Android mobile application is also designed to let you stay informed;
- if you play online via your account, the notification will be sent to you right there;
- contact 3256, and you will hear what numbers are the winning ones (the call is charged at 0.35 euro TTC/min).

France Keno Payout and Taxes

---|---|
Up to €300 | These prizes are minor, so you can claim them at any FDJ-participating retailer. |
€301-€30,000 | To claim these winnings, you can turn to the same FDJ retailers or Française des Jeux Group Payment Centers. Take a valid form of your photo ID and your winning ticket with you. |

The limit by default equals €3,000, while the range is between €50 and €149,999. If your prize is smaller, feel free to claim it at any Lottery retailer. Major prizes must be claimed in person at the FDJ Payment Centers or the Lottery Headquarters in Boulogne-Billancourt. |
The lottery winners are freed from taxes in France. Still, if you are a foreign player, some deductions on behalf of your country may follow, so study the issue beforehand.
