Claim Lottery Winnings in Iowa

There are some features of the claiming process in Iowa that you need to know. Previously, there were 365 days given to the winners of Powerball, Mega Millions, Lucky for Life, and Lotto America to claim their prizes, while those who played the Iowa-specific games (Pick 3 and Pick 4) had just 90 days to have their prizes redeemed.

In December 2022, the Iowa Lottery Board voted to change the period for claiming in those four games to 180 days from the date of the drawing. So, starting on April 23, 2022, the new deadline is on. Thus, you will have 180 days to get your multi-jurisdictional games winnings and 90 days to claim your local lottery winning amounts.

Claim in Person

Depending on the amount you managed to hit, you can choose one of these options:

  1. To claim a prize up to and including $600, turn to any IA Lottery official retailer. Please check if your retailer has enough cash to redeem your prize beforehand.
  2. The Iowa Lottery offices are the best option for the $600-$250,000 winners. Opt for the closest one.
  3. The big winners must go to the Iowa Lottery headquarters office in Clive to get their huge prizes.

Besides, you will need some documents to get your money. For the prizes of $100 and over, they are:

  • your ticket signed on the back;
  • the winner claim form;
  • Federal Form W-9 (for U.S. citizens) or Federal Form W-8BEN (for non-U.S. residents).

The winnings of $600 will also require a valid photo ID and your Social Security Number.

FAQs About Iowa Lotteries

For your convenience, almost the same time of the sales cut-off is set for the national lotteries, and the same time of the sales stop is set for the in-house draw games as well. For more details, see the table in the Games Details section or visit the official Iowa Lottery website.

If you believe in those lucky places that sell a lot of winning tickets in Iowa, then try to figure them out by studying the winners’ stories on the official lottery site. But remember, everyone has the same chances, so act!

Yes, debit cards, checks, and cash are the allowed payment methods at the IA Lottery retailers.

There are not many games offered in Iowa, and the national lotteries prevail. There are four games, also played in some other states, including Mega Millions, Powerball, Lucky for Life, and Lotto America, as well as two Iowa-only games, Pick 3 and Pick 4.

All the lottery prizes except the small ones are liable for taxation in Iowa, so estimate all your future deductions carefully.

No local lotteries in Iowa can be played via the Internet, and the tickets can’t be purchased there either. To enter the multi-state games, visit the best lottery sites.

Lottery winners’ information is public in Iowa, so you can’t stay fully anonymous there. But our tips on how to remain anonymous after a lottery win may be helpful for you.

The limitations are the highest in Iowa, as the legal gambling age starts at 21 years old here.

For Lucky for Life, Lotto America, Mega Millions, and Powerball, any tickets bought up to April 22, 2023, drawing will still have a 365-day deadline for prize claims. If you purchase your ticket for April 23, 2023, or later, you will have a claiming period of 180 days. For Pick 3 and Pick 4, the same 90-day period is preserved.

The lottery tickets expire in Iowa, like other US games, so don’t drag all that out.

There is nothing favorable we could tell you in this case. The ticket is your only bearer instrument, and the lottery can’t redeem your prize without it. That’s why we recommend signing it and keeping it closer as long as it is up-to-date.

The IA Lottery revenue implies spending on four key purposes. They are the support for the state’s veterans and their families through the Iowa Veterans Trust Fund; support for the surviving families of Iowa firefighters and peace officers who perished in the line of duty; backing for the Vision Iowa Program developing tourism and community attractions; contributions to the state General Fund as a help for a variety of other projects.
