The Biggest Lotto America Winners and Jackpots

All of the exact jackpot winners are mostly unknown. But in the table, you can see four of them.

NameJackpotNumbers*Date
Debbie and Dennis Kujava (the ticket was bought in northern Minnesota)$22.8 millionUnknownMarch 14, 2018
Jeffery Love (the ticket was bought in Minnesota)$21.6 millionUnknownJuly 10, 2019
Rodney Young (the ticket was bought in Tennessee)$9.01 MillionUnknownApril 1, 2020
Chuck Anderson (the ticket was bought in Davenport, Iowa)$4.38 MillionUnknownMay 5, 2018

However, there are two stories about the people who caught their luck and were brave enough to discover their prize.

The first known Lotto America winners are Debby and Dennis Kujava, a family from Badger, Minnesota. Debbie bought her regular ticket on her way back home from work, and this time the purchase brought her $22.8 million. She shared the winnings with her brother Dennis as they were both avid lottery players and once agreed that they would split the prize equally if either of them hit the jackpot.

Jeffery Love, another jackpot winner, also comes from Minnesota. Every day he would drive past the lottery office in Roseville and tell himself that he would one day come here for a big win. The prize amount of $21.6 million shows that the law of attraction works!

Lotto America Rules in the USA

Lotto America was founded in 1987 and then, in April 1992, was replaced by Powerball. However, it was relaunched to replace Hot Lotto in 2017 and has been held since then. There are only 13 states that participate in Lotto America:

  1. Delaware
  2. Idaho
  3. Iowa
  4. Kansas
  5. Maine
  6. Minnesota
  7. Montana
  8. New Mexico
  9. North Dakota
  10. Oklahoma
  11. South Dakota
  12. Tennessee
  13. West Virginia

There are several key features of the lottery:

  • You are allowed to participate when you are over 18 years old, but everything starts at 21 if you buy a ticket in Iowa.
  • The jackpot is shared equally among all first-prize winners.
  • You may receive your jackpot as a lump sum or choose annuity payments.
  • The jackpot amount changes while the other 8 prizes are always fixed.
  • You can purchase tickets from this list of the best lottery websites.

The rules of Lotto America are:

  1. Select 5 regular numbers between 1 to 52 for a row
  2. Choose a Star Ball number ranging between 1 and 10.
  3. You can also turn to the Quick Pick option on the website to delegate the number selection to the computer.
  4. Wait for the results. They will be displayed within 2 hours after the draw.

The studio where Lotto America draws are held is at the headquarters of the Florida Lottery in Tallahassee. However, it is never shown on TV so follow the results online.

Advanced Draws

Lotto America offers the opportunity to purchase tickets in advance, but their number is limited. The number of tickets you can buy at once is determined by the state. For example, the limit is 10 for Delaware, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Idaho, and for Maine and New Mexico, the maximum is 20. The biggest packs you can purchase in advance are in Montana and West Virginia, where the number is 24. Learn the rules of the lottery in your state to know what to expect.

USA Lotto America Payout and Taxes

The claiming period for Lotto America prizes may last from 90 days to a year, depending on the state. Besides, the amount is also important.

PrizeHow to get your prize in cash
$1 – $599You may claim it at any retailer in your state or mail the winning ticket with the claim to your state lottery.
$600+Like any other state lottery, Lotto America has district claim centers and offices to redeem larger prizes. In some states, claiming by mail is also possible.
JackpotFirst-prize winners should contact the lottery headquarters in the state where their ticket was purchased. It is possible to take a cash lump sum or choose 30 annual payments.

The Lotto America prizes are also subject to taxes, but the law differs from state to state.

Anyway, you will pay 24% federal tax if your prize is over $5,000, but then you should learn the state law for more details. For example, you don’t have to pay state income tax in Tennessee and South Dakota, while in other states you will.

Use the lottery tax calculator. You can calculate the final amount you get after paying all the taxes in the state where you won.
