The principles of the Play 4 lottery are similar to those of the Play 3 lottery, also run by the Connecticut Lottery Corporation. The distinction is the number of digits you must select and, thus, the number of winning combinations. All the general features are quite the same:

- Straight/Box – this style means that numbers may match both exact and random orders. Here, half of your prize will be straight and another half will be boxed.
- Pairs – this type of game implies any 2 digits matching the exact order.
- Combo – you can play when you pay $0,5 or $1 to win up to 5,000.
