Lotto Prizes and Odds

The Irish Lotto is a very versatile game that includes not only one main draw but also several additional raffles. From the start, players can win prizes in 8 prize tiers. The final payouts are floating, which adds more excitement and anticipation.

MatchPrize Pool DistributionOdds
6Jackpot (minimum €2 million, €19.06 million cap)1 in 10,737,573 or 0.0000093%

315.93% of the prize pool1 in 54
2 + Bonus Ball€3 Daily Million Quick Pick (with Daily Million Plus)1 in 72

The overall odds of winning any lottery prize are estimated at 1 in 29, which is quite an inspiring value. So, it’s no wonder that Lotto is so popular in Ireland, even though it is played without any multipliers or add-ons. But players are hardly disappointed for this reason.

The National Lottery, the biggest local provider offering games of chance across the country, allows participants to extend the excitement and join additional draws: Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2. There is also a consolation prize of €500, which can be won in the Lotto Plus Raffle that occurs after all three main draws are over. You don’t need to pay extra for this; just wait until numbers between 0000 and 9999 are drawn and hope the payout is yours.

Lotto Plus 1 Prizes and Odds

Even if you fail to win a Lotto prize after the first draw, cheer up. You still have a chance to become a lottery winner by playing Lotto Plus 1. This extra draw takes place alongside the main ones, and the winning odds remain the same. However, there is a crucial difference: all payouts, including the jackpot, are fixed.

Lotto Plus 2 Prizes and Odds

If you’re still not lucky, don’t give up. You can join Lotto Plus 2, another extra draw that follows the Lotto and Lotto Plus 1 raffles. Although you have to pay extra for this option and the prizes are smaller, many Irish players are happy to add it to their lottery ticket and give their lucky numbers one more try.

Lotto Drawing Schedule

There’s nothing unusual about the Irish Lotto drawing schedule. It’s a traditional game held twice a week: once on a weekday and once on the weekend. The draws start at a convenient time, not too late and not too early, so you can explore lottery numerology predictions after finishing your daily routine.

The Biggest Lotto Winners and Jackpots

The Irish Lotto has made headlines many times with its life-changing jackpots and lucky winners. Since its inception, the National Lottery has crowned several multi-millionaires, and a few jackpot wins stand out as the biggest in the game’s history.

The most prominent win took place in January 2022, when a winner who chose to remain anonymous took home €19.06 million. For now, this amount is the jackpot cap for the main Lotto draw and hasn’t been beaten yet. Still, this sum impresses just as much as the prizes in the famous lotteries Powerball and Mega Millions.

Although the other big wins were smaller than this record payout, we’re sure the winners were over the moon to receive them. See the table below to get inspired and understand that big wins are possible: someone was fortunate enough to win, and you could be the next lucky winner.

Lotto Rules in Ireland

Lotto is a national Irish game of chance developed by the National Lottery. Its first draw took place in 1988; the lottery was introduced with a 6/36 matrix and Saturday draws only. Then, some changes followed:

  • 1990 – Wednesday draws were added.
  • 1992 – a new 6/39 format and Bonus Ball were introduced.
  • 1994 – the ball pool increased to 42, and Quick Pick became an innovation for the Irish Lotto.
  • 1998 – the minimum jackpot was set at IR£1 million.
  • 2000 – Lotto Plus 1 draw was added.
  • 2002 – Lotto Plus 2 draw completed the lottery structure, and prize payouts were converted to euros.
  • 2006 – the ball pool increased to 45 numbers.
  • 2015 – the final Lotto matrix was introduced.
  • 2018 – most Lotto prizes were increased.

We can’t even suppose whether there will be more updates in the future, but be sure that we will follow them closely. We always share lottery statistics, lotto predictions, information on how many combinations would guarantee a jackpot, and more. If there are any changes, we will inform you. For now, the Lotto rules are as follows:

  • Players can enter Irish lotteries if they are at least 18.
  • To enter, a player picks 6 numbers from a 47-ball grid, either manually or using Quick Pick.
  • There is also a Bonus number that creates extra prize categories, but you don’t need to select it; it is drawn automatically.
  • Players can take part in Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2 draws to boost their chances of winning.
  • The main Lotto draw prizes are floating and depend on the prize pool, while Lotto Plus 1 and 2 prizes are fixed.
  • If you want a chance to win an extra €500, Lotto Plus Raffle is the option to choose.
  • Lotto draws take place on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
  • You can enter the lottery online or play with paper tickets.

If paper tickets are your choice, visit a National Lottery authorized store and follow these steps:

  1. Mark 6 numbers between 1 and 47 on your playslip. You don’t need to select the Bonus Ball or Lotto Plus Raffle number; they are assigned automatically.
  2. Choose the number of lines you want to play.
  3. Mark Quick Pick if you want random number selection.
  4. Decide if you will join Lotto Plus 1 and Lotto Plus 2.
  5. Select the number of consecutive draws.
  6. Check your selections and give the playslip to the staff.
  7. Pay for your entry and keep your ticket safe until you hear good news!

Online players can also play through the Internet. The instructions are simple:

  1. Create an account on the National Lottery official website.
  2. Go to the NL game page and select Lotto.
  3. Open the e-playslip and complete at least two lines of numbers.
  4. Tick the Lotto Plus options if desired.
  5. Choose the number of consecutive draws in the Advance Play section.
  6. Click “Play Now” and pay for your entry.

To play wherever you are and whenever you like, download the Lottery.ie mobile app. This way, you can keep your chance to win with you at all times. This option is as convenient as playing on international online lottery websites.

Once you’ve played, the next exciting step is to check whether you’re a winner. Thankfully, it’s easy to follow the results through a variety of trusted sources:

  • the National Lottery official website;
  • email notifications for online winners;
  • app notifications;
  • TV broadcasts.

Additionally, we provide the results of Lotto, Lotto Plus 1, and Lotto Plus 2 on our website. Stay with us so you don’t miss life-changing news.

Some countries, like Argentina, the United States, Spain, France, and Brazil, set high tax rates for lottery prizes, but this is not the case in Ireland. Lotto winnings are not taxed here. Ireland is on the list of European countries that do not tax income earned from games of chance. We are sure Irish players are quite satisfied with this advantage.
