Lotto Prizes and Odds

The Costa Rican Lotto is a classic game of chance with a traditional structure and very simple rules. If you have never played a lottery before, you will grasp the principles in just a few moments. But simplicity is not the only perk that attracts so many players. The main reason is the jackpot of at least CRC 50,000,000. Each participant has the same chance to win this sum, so the next lucky winner could be you.

MatchBasic Prize PayoutsOdds
JackpotCRC 50,000,000 (minimum estimated)1 in 749,398 or 0.0001%
4CRC 100,0001 in 4,163 or 0.02%
3CRC 9,5001 in 119 or 0.84%
2CRC 6001 in 11

In addition to the possibility of claiming a fantastic reward, the lottery offers remarkably good odds. Experts estimate the probability of getting any prize at 1 in 11. That sounds encouraging, and it explains why so many players in Costa Rica eagerly purchase tickets both online and in-store. Still, you will not find any multipliers in this game. But do not let this fact discourage you. The lottery gives you a second chance to win while still remaining very simple.

Lotto Revancha Prizes and Odds

Revancha is a second-chance game that follows the main Lotto draw. You do not need to pick lottery numbers again; your previous selections are automatically included. Although Revancha prizes are smaller, the joy of winning them is still rewarding.

Lotto Drawing Schedule

The Lotto schedule is somewhat unusual compared with other lottery games of this type. Its draws take place three times a week: twice on weekdays and once on weekends. The time is convenient, as winners are determined right after sunset, and participants quickly find out whether they won the lottery prize or not.

The Biggest Lotto Winners and Jackpots

Though information about the luckiest Lotto winners is often concealed in Costa Rica, we managed to uncover some notable cases.

In December 2020, the Lotto provider announced the largest jackpot in the country’s lottery history, over CRC 5 billion, or roughly $8.2 million. This massive prize came from the Gordo Navideño, or Christmas Jackpot, the most anticipated draw of the year in Costa Rica. The winning ticket was sold in San José, the capital city. Since each ticket was divided into 40 fractions, the top prize was shared among several winners, with each person receiving a portion based on the number of fractions they purchased.

Another remarkable win took place a year earlier in Heredia, where a group of coworkers claimed CRC 1.5 billion. The jackpot was divided into equal shares, and each winner planned to invest their payout.

Lotto Rules in Costa Rica

Lotto is the most prominent game of chance in Costa Rica. It is operated by the Costa Rican National Lottery (Lotería Nacional de Costa Rica), founded in 1885 and run by the Junta de Protección Social (JPS). Lotto is comparatively new; its first draw took place in 2014. As for the rules, they are very simple:

  • You can play Lotto or any other lottery in Costa Rica only if you are at least 21 years old.
  • The game follows the 5/41 matrix. Learn the Pick 5 strategy to prepare for the next draw.
  • Players win if they match 5, 4, 3, or 2 numbers. The more of your lottery lucky numbers that are matched, the higher your prize.
  • The Costa Rican jackpot is progressive and starts at CRC 50 million.
  • If you fail to win in the main Lotto draw, you can join the Revancha game for another chance.
  • Lotto takes place three times a week.
  • You can play the lottery online or with paper tickets.

The majority of players in Costa Rica still regard paper tickets as the most reliable type of entry. The process of taking part in the game is simple:

  1. Find a lottery retailer (called “boleteros” in Costa Rica).
  2. Ask for a bet slip and review it carefully.
  3. Select 5 numbers between 0 and 40.
  4. Make any additional selections if necessary.
  5. Return your bet slip to the “boletero” and receive your paper ticket.

Lotto online is another option, although it is available only to Costa Rican citizens. If you qualify, go to the JPS official website, click Play Online at the bottom, and follow the instructions to create an account and purchase a Lotto ticket.

There are several ways for players to check their results. The most reliable source is the official website of the Junta de Protección Social. Online players also receive notifications by email. Lottery kiosks and street vendors are common across the country, often displaying colorful boards with the latest winning numbers. You can also stay with us and track the results on our Lotto page.

Costa Rica Lotto Payout and Taxes

Costa Rican winners have enough time for both celebration and prize collection; they are given 60 days to collect their money. The lottery winnings claim process involves nothing unusual and usually depends on the amount won.

AmountHow to Claim My Lotto Prize in Costa Rica
Up to CRC 50,000Smaller winnings can be claimed at any authorized lottery vendor (“boletero”). A winner only needs to present the winning ticket or its fraction together with a valid ID.
Prizes are paid in cash on the spot.
CRC 50,000 – CRC 500,000Medium-sized payouts are collected at designated lottery regional agencies or JPS offices. Winners may receive the money in cash, by bank transfer, or in the form of a cheque.
CRC 500,000 and over

Large payouts and jackpots are collected exclusively at the JPS central office in San José. The winner must provide:

  • The original winning ticket or its fraction
  • A valid form of ID
  • Bank account details (required for prizes over CRC 5 million)

After the claim is processed, the money is transferred to the winner’s bank account.

Online winningsOnline winners may accelerate the process by providing their IBAN details in their player profiles. In this case, the money is deposited directly into their accounts without visiting JPS offices.

Lottery winnings in Costa Rica are fully exempt from taxation. Winners receive the total amount of their prize without deductions, regardless of its value. Although the government has occasionally proposed new laws to introduce a tax on large prizes, none of these initiatives have taken effect. As a result, both residents and visitors who win in national lotteries such as the Gordo Navideño enjoy tax-free rewards with no reporting obligations.

Still, future changes remain possible, so it is advisable to consult a lottery lawyer before claiming a prize in Costa Rica.

Things to Know About Lotto in Costa Rica

  • A Lotto ticket costs CRC 600 in Costa Rica. If you choose to play Revancha, add CRC 400 to your payment for a total of CRC 1,000, which is about $2.
  • Tickets for special draws, including the Gordo Navideño (Costa Rica’s Christmas draw), are released months in advance and often sell out quickly.
  • Lotto tickets are frequently sold in fractions or “pedacitos.” This allows a single ticket to be shared among multiple buyers. It makes play more affordable but also means large jackpots are often divided.
  • The proceeds from Costa Rican Lotto ticket sales support public hospitals, senior care facilities, addiction recovery programs, and other health and social services.
  • The lottery is part of the national tradition in Costa Rica. Vendors or “boleteros” often build relationships with regular customers, and neighborhoods celebrate big wins collectively.

Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday are the days when luck may smile on you.

Lotto starts at 7:30 p.m. CST, and Revancha begins right after the main extraction ends.

The record win of CRC 5 billion occurred in 2020. The ticket was divided into 40 fractions, so several players shared the jackpot. Each winner received an amount proportional to the number of fractions purchased.

That year, San José, the capital of Costa Rica, became the luckiest place.

Costa Rican Lotto tickets are available through local “boleteros” and on the JPS official website.

Lottery draws in Costa Rica are broadcast live, usually on major national channels such as Teletica (Channel 7) or Canal 13 (SINART).

Sales close 15 minutes before the draw. This means that 7:14 p.m. CST on draw days is the final moment to join the game.
